Today I wanted to take a moment to share with you one of my most favourite little ideas and its this – creating your life by design. I heard this idea towards the end of last year and it really resonated with me, so I hope you can get something from it too.
Creating a life by design is the concept of doing the things day in and day out that you absolutely love. It’s having the time and freedom to choose how you spend your days, rather than your day being dictated to you by someone else. It’s having the courage to take a chance and try something new. Choosing that thing that really lights you up, rather than just letting the daily grind bring you down.
In my life I’ve definitely been the victim of the daily grind – I’ve hidden my dreams under my desk and allowed the fear of shining bright to get the better of me. Whilst I’ve been incredibly lucky to see quite a lot of the world and have had some truly remarkable experiences in my life, I’ve often felt like something was missing.
A while back I moved to London with the romantic notion of being able to travel all the time. Sure, I got to see some pretty incredible places and I met some really fantastic people in the 6 years I lived there, but I also spent 10hrs a day, five days a week living according to someone else’s schedule (not to mention the time spent commuting to the office). I used to think this was the way it was – you went to Uni, got a ‘good’ job and worked for the rest of your life – perhaps you had some great holidays each year, bought a nice house and met the partner of your dreams. I indeed had all of those things, but for some reason I still felt incredibly unsettled.
What I’ve come to realize is that whilst I had what appeared from the outside as a good job, it certainly wasn’t something that made me feel alive everyday. The small glimpses of joy and freedom that I felt on holiday were always so short lived. By midway through the first day back at work after a trip, I was so immersed back into my daily schedule that I could barely even remember that I had just taken time off. I was tired most of the time – always running from one thing to another and never taking the time to consider what it was that I really wanted. I was always telling everyone how ‘busy’ I was, though secretly I always felt like I should be doing more…..I know, crazy!! What I’ve now come to see is that what I really wanted was to be doing more of what I loved!
So, what’s changed?
A little over a year ago I decided to make the move back – back to the small town where I grew up – something I NEVER thought that I’d do. At the time, it felt like such a big decision – was I running away from my problems in London, would I really be happy back in Australia? I honestly didn’t know – all I knew was that I needed to make a change.
A year on, I can safely say that it’s been the best decision EVER! I’ve been able to simplify my life. I now work close to home – I’m able to finish work everyday at half four and I’m usually on the beach by 5pm. I’m able to spend more time with my family who live close by and I’m getting back in touch with people who I used to know years ago. The best part of all is that now I have the thinking space to be able to sit down and plan out what I want from my life – I can design my life according to what I want, what lights me up and what brings me the most joy.
Here are my top tips for creating a life by design:
- Take time each day to slow down – get up half an hour earlier each morning if you have to.
- Try journalling – each morning when you get up, take 20 mins to write out your goals and intentions for your day and watch over time which ones stand out.
- Invest in some self-development – we all have the power to be amazing and often it’s our mind-set that holds us back. Hire a coach, go see an inspiring speaker, chat to a friend who is doing the things you want to be doing.
- Enroll in a new course – it doesn’t have to be a University degree, it can be a short course in something that interests you – you never know who you’ll meet and where life can take you.
- Believe in yourself – you only get one chance at life and it can be as amazing as you want it to be – only you get to decide how your life looks.
I hope you enjoyed this post – these days creating a life by design is something that I’m really passionate about. If you liked it, please share with your tribe and I would love to read in the comments below how you plan to get the most out of your life.
