Yesterday I talked about some of my non-negotiables – those little things that I do on a daily basis that help to keep me on the right track (you can find a link to that post here).  One of those things was my epic morning green smoothie.

Flash back two years ago and you would have seen me gagging at the thought of drinking something green every morning, but about a year ago, I just decided to try it out and the rest as they say is history!

I’m a big fan of having that green hit first thing in the morning – I know that I’m packing in some super nutrition as the base to my day and I find it helps keep me on target for the rest of the day as well.  If you’re anything like how I used to be, then I would suggest adding a little more fruit to start with, then slowly reducing until you get to the quantities below.  You have to remember that this is a nutritional drink – it’s not meant to be jam packed full of sugar.  If it was, I’d just get you to buy one of the ‘green’ drinks you find in the supermarket!

So, here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 300mls filtered water
  • handful of spinach
  • handful of kale
  • 1 scoop of greens powder
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
  • 1 scoop of fibre
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1/4 frozen banana
  • 5-6 frozen raspberries

Method:

Place the water, kale, spinach, chia seeds and powders into the blender and pulse lightly for a few seconds

NOTE: Kale is super yummy, but you need to separate the leaves from the stems (the stems are bitter)!

Next I pop in the frozen fruit and give it a whizz on high for about a minute.

Too easy!  It only takes a few minutes to prepare.  Like I said earlier, if you find that this isn’t sweet enough, then add half a frozen banana or a few more berries.  You should aim to not have too much fruit in there, however.

A quick note about the powders I use – I like to supplement with a greens powder just to capture a wide range of essential minerals from my food.  The protein powder I use is formulated from rice protein and this is important.  In the past I’ve used whey protein powders and always wondered why I suffered from severe gas and bloating about an hour afterwards……yep, dairy and I are just not friends!  Since switching to a plant based protein powder, I no longer have this issue and I can enjoy protein powder again.

Let me know if you decide to try this one out and if you love it as much as I do.
Here’s to the start of another amazing week – get out there and make it your best!

With love,
Shelley
